Recently signed to This Feeling Records, Fitzroy Holt’s current single ‘Medicine’ has seen the rising newcomer earn comparisons to the likes of Michael Kiwanuka and Scott Walker. His rootsy cocktail of confessional soul and bluesy garage-rock has taken him to festivals including the Isle of Wight, Truck and The Great Escape this summer, while also landing airplay from BBC Music Introducing. Now Fitzroy adds to his growing acclaim by sharing the video for ‘Medicine’. The video places Fitzroy in his home-from-home setting of Norton’s Bar in Digbeth, where he claims you can get the best Guinness in Brum. Shot in a shadowy, introspective monochrome, it shows him alone in the venue - simultaneously performer, punter and barman. Its loneliness is an apt metaphor for the song, which sees Fitzroy bravely revisiting his experiences suffering with substance abuse. Yet as the song steps into a brighter future, his desolation is cut with fiery live footage of Fitzroy and his band performing at the Isle of Wight Festival. The video was directed and edited by two of Fitzroy’s most trusted collaborators: George Morris, the percussionist from his live band and his regular studio engineer, and Patsy Wesson, the muse who inspired the song’s redemptive spirit. Fitzroy says, “Trying to match and create visuals which married the emotions and themes of the song without being overt and cheesy was no easy feat. I think we shot at least five times more footage than we actually used in the video. We then decided to splice footage from our Isle of Wight performance into it. If you were there you’ll know it was full of passion and energy that added the raw edge the video needed. The video turned out like the song, I guess, a dark ode to love, but a real labour of love also." The ‘Medicine’ video comes as Fitzroy prepares to play a London headline show at St. Pancras Old Church on October 28th. Remaining tickets are available HERE. Fitzroy Holt performed in various rock bands around the Wolverhampton area, but the idea of working as a solo artist first gained traction during the initial lockdown. Living in a semi-derelict factory in the city, the relative isolation of the time resulted in a far more introspective approach in his writing. He debuted with the self-financed release ‘Kelly’ in 2021, which was inspired by the struggles he saw women face while working with the local homeless charity Haven. This Feeling came onboard as his personal champions, leading to a deal with their label earlier this year. His music also took on a richer production with the warmth of his live performance with the backing of his band and by working with producer Gavin Monaghan (Paolo Nutini, Robert Plant, Editors). He’s inspired by artists whose lyrical edge finds the grace between personal experience and pure poetry, including Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Damon Albarn and Yves Tumor. Yet an ethos of recognising and understanding other people’s struggles is also a core aspect of his songwriting style. Dead Soul Revival is a hard rock/post grunge band from Los Angeles formed in 2020 by vocalist / guitarist Matt Clark and drummer Scott Freak (both formerly of Freakhouse) and bassist Kendall Clark who have spent the last few years writing and recording their debut album Ignite set for release worldwide via Sliptrick Records. The groups name comes from being at a low point but having the strength and hope to be alive again. The music of Dead Soul Revival is a blend of heavy guitars, powerful drums, and electronics. The lyrics are heartfelt and inspired with Matt Clark’s soaring vocals and Les Paul bringing the songs vibe and attitude all at once. Add in Kendall’s thick, melodic bass lines holding down the bottom end and Scott’s thundering tribal rhythms and you have the recipe for a band to be reckoned with. (Listen here) The powerful version of the track is the theme song for the recently announced ‘Mad About The Boy – The Noël Coward Story’, a feature documentary chronicling the life and career of the famed playwright, director, and flamboyant wit and bon vivant from Oscar and Bafta-Nominated director Barnaby Thompson (Pixie, St Trinians). The film is set for release in 2023- the 50th anniversary of Coward’s death. This Sunday, Adam Lambert performed his rendition of ‘Mad About The Boy’, which serves as his first release since signing to Warner Music, on the 2022 series of BBC Strictly Come Dancing. The Our Dementia Choir announce their first ever single release What’s Your Story?. Recorded at the world famous Abbey Road Studios, the track features vocals from all 16 of the choir members, is conducted by Mark De-Lisser and produced by Rik Simpson (Coldplay). What’s Your Story? is available to pre-save now via Decca Records. Our Dementia Choir Sings Again with Vicky McClure launches Monday 10th Oct at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
Vicky McClure (Chair of the Our Dementia Choir charity) and the choir first performed “What’s your story?” at the Power of Music report launch event, hosted by Universal Music UK in King’s Cross on 20 April 2022. The report was co-written by Music for Dementia and UK Music. Vicky McClure (Chair of the Our Dementia Choir charity) says:- “I couldn’t be prouder of every single person who makes Our Dementia Choir what it is. Being able to record a song that gives voice to people living with dementia at the most famous recording studio in the world is an extraordinary achievement, and it’s made even more incredible when you think that the recording was made with people living with dementia. For me, this is the power of music in action and shows just what music can do for people with dementia and their carers when people are given access to it. People are more than their diagnosis. We hope ‘What’s your story’ inspires those living with dementia and those who care for them to know that music is there for them, and that music is a powerful tool they can use to support health and wellbeing. Please stream / download this song, tell friends and family about it! Let’s make some noise!!!” Grace Meadows (Campaign Director, Music for Dementia) says: “Music can have a transformative effect on people living with dementia and few things show the power of music in action better than Our Dementia Choir. It’s a fantastic achievement for the choir to have recorded a song at Abbey Road. It allows choir members to be seen beyond their diagnosis and as talented performers in their own right. Vicky and her remarkable choir have done a brilliant job of bringing the often ignored subject of dementia and its lack of care provision into our living rooms at home. This is why, in our Power of Music report, we called for want to see greater investment in grassroots services in people’s communities so everyone can have access to and experience the powerful health and wellbeing benefits of music. With this single release we hope the choir also managed to raise much needed money to help secure the choir’s future.” Music for Dementia will feature a list of dementia choirs and singing groups on their website for anyone that has seen Our Dementia Choir Sings Again with Vicky McClure and inspired to go along. Part 1 of Our Dementia Choir Sings Again with Vicky McClure will broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Monday 10 October at 9pm and Part 2 on Monday 17 October at 9pm. Four years ago, Vicky McClure formed a choir of people living with dementia, scientifically proving the power of music and song to change the lives of those living with the condition. In the new series, Vicky and her dementia choir are back. And this time they want change. With the growing care crisis, and a lack of action from those in charge, Vicky is angry at the current system and wants to do something about it. And the place to start – making music therapy available to everyone with dementia. Our Dementia Choir Sings Again with Vicky McClure sees the choir and Vicky take matters into their own hands. Some of the members may have changed due to this cruel condition taking its toll, but old faces line up alongside new ones as they use their considerable voices to show those in power that music is vital for people living with dementia. But they need action now, and Vicky is using music to grab the attention of everyone she can. From being the first group of people with dementia to record and release a single at Abbey Road, to performing on-stage at a music festival beside an A-list artist, nothing and no-one will stand in the way of Vicky and the choir in getting their voices heard. Our Dementia Choir is a Nottingham based performing choir which supports and improves the lives of people living with dementia through the power of music. It is a registered charity and is chaired by Vicky McClure. Music for Dementia, founded and funded by The Utley Foundation, campaigns for people with dementia to have music as an integral part of their care whatever their circumstances. Working with over 200 cross sector organisations and groups, we are calling on the music industry, philanthropists, and the health and social care sectors to help make this possible. “100% of The Dementia Choir, Rik Simpson and Decca Records’ Net Revenue from audio streams of this Single and at least 45p per download sold of this Single will be donated to Our Dementia Choir (registered charity number: 1187483) which supports and improves the lives of people living with dementia through the power of music. “Net Revenue” means monies actually received by received by Decca Records in the United Kingdom with respect to the sales (including downloads and streaming) of this Single less the following deductions: (i) distribution fees; (ii) credits for returns; (iii) mechanicals; (iv) VAT and other applicable sales or withholding taxes.” FOLLOW OUR DEMENTIA CHOIR INSTAGRAM || FACEBOOK || TIKTOK || SITE FOLLOW MUSIC FOR DEMENTIA SITE || TWITTER || INSTAGRAM || FACEBOOK Romanian singer-songwriter Sorana celebrates her “Happy Birthday Sadness" with new single10/10/2022 In honour of her recent birthday, multi-platinum singer-songwriter Sorana has shared her new single, ‘Happy Birthday Sadness’ available now at all DSPs and streaming services. "Birthday songs are always happy but I’ve always felt kinda melancholic on my birthday especially at my party when my friends bring out the cake and say ‘make a wish’ because in that moment I think of everything that is missing. I moved from country to country so many times that no matter what, I always end up missing someone on my birthday. Song writing is my therapy and having recently celebrated, I wanted to write a dramatic birthday song to express a feeling I’m sure a lot of people have felt,” Sorana tells PAPER. “It’s not always popping champagne, eating cake and laughing with your friends. Sometimes you’re alone or surrounded by the wrong people, away from your family, or lover or maybe you just want to cry at midnight. ‘Happy Birthday Sadness’ is a song for anyone who has ever felt the loneliest on what’s supposed to be our happiest day." Sorana kicked off 2022 with ‘redruM,’her explosive collaboration with superstar DJ / producer David Guetta, now boasting over 25.8M global audio streams. Named by PEOPLE as one of “The Talented Emerging Artists Making Their Mark in 2022,” Sorana left her hometown of Romania and brought her dream to life with ambition, determination, and good old-fashioned hustle. Sorana),” which has generated over 120Mworldwide streams and counting. Now with a string of remarkable solo releases and more unique and powerful pop music on the horizon, Sorana continues to cement her status as a major new artist and unstoppable pop force to be reckoned with. The BBC, together with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), will organise the Contest in consultation with UA:PBC, Ukraine’s public broadcaster and last year’s winners of the Contest. Liverpool was chosen following a strong city bid process that examined facilities at the venue; the ability to accommodate thousands of visiting delegations, crew, fans and journalists; infrastructure; and the cultural offer of the Host City in reflecting Ukraine’s win in 2022. Eurovision Song Contest Executive Supervisor Martin Österdahl welcomed the news: ‘Liverpool is the ideal place to host the 67th Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of Ukraine. The city is synonymous with music and Liverpool Arena exceeds all the requirements needed to stage a global event of this scale. We have been very impressed with the passion the city has shown in embracing the Contest and their inclusive ideas for placing last year’s winners, Ukraine, front and centre when thousands of fans visit next May. This will be the first Eurovision Song Contest to be held in the UK in 25 years and, as we work with our Host Broadcaster, the BBC, to celebrate Ukraine’s victory, this unique production promises to be a very special one indeed.’ Read more here:- https://eurovision.tv/story/liverpool-will-host-eurovision-2023 Paul Dillon from Portumna, Co. It was mixed by Seth Manchester (METZ, Atlas Vending), mastered by Joe Laporta (IDLES, David Bowie, Leon Bridges), produced by Dan Sadin and can be heard now at this link: https://open.spotify.com/track/2t4VyvrTZjrBa4BQEitHk6?si=3443bede588f42d8 “[The song] is an idiom that means even the most docile and meek creature will retaliate when pushed too far,” explains band member Sapphire Jewell. “I’d never felt such a personal connection to a figure of speech until this one came along -and haven’t found another more interesting to me since. It summarized something I’d been feeling for a while. I was the worm, I’d been pushed too far, and it was time I did something about it. This song is my inner voice expressing what I was thinking at the time. I’d never have it in me to unleash like that in real life, but I appreciate the safe space that art and performing has given me to let off steam. It’s almost like one long primal scream and I love it.” Cuffed Up have been turning heads since their debut double A-side was released at the end of 2019. The band garnered much support as an unsigned act first of all from KEXP (Song of The Day/Music That Matters), and subsequently from the likes of NME, DIY Magazine and The Line Of Best Fit. After an opening run supporting Silversun Pickups in 2020, the band released their self-titled debut EP through Hassle Records (UK) and Corduroy Records (US) where the lead singles “French Exit” + “Small Town Kid” garnered much acclaim from legendary UK tastemakers like Steve Lamacq (BBC Radio 6), Daniel P Carter (BBC Radio 1) + John Kennedy (Radio X). Cuffed Up started in 2018 when songwriter / guitarist Ralph Torrefranca was inspired by the post-punk scene coming out of the UK with bands like IDLES, Fontaines DC and Shame. Sooner after he recruited his long-time drummer Joe Liptock and bassist Vic Ordonez to work on a batch of songs for the new project. At just seventeen, Precious’ lyrics manage to contain universal sentiments that speak to her generation - the latest single, about the fear women feel walking alone a night, is no different: “She’s cold and she’s drunk, A little red riding her luck in the hood, She’s asking for trouble, Oh, that’s what they’ll say if trouble comes heading her way”. Swelling until it reaches a huge hook, destined to be screamed in crowded rooms, ‘Looking For Trouble’ follows Precious’ debut single ‘My Eyes Only,’ a big statement of intent from pop’s brightest new talent. Speaking about the track, Precious explains “‘Looking for Trouble’ is a song about rape culture and victim blaming. It addresses the unfortunately relatable feeling of fear when walking alone at night as a female. The lyrics also address the way that victims of sexual abuse are all too commonly questioned about things such as their clothing, actions or level of intoxication as if to justify predatory behaviour. I feel very passionately about discussing this subject matter through my music and I hope this song acts as a conversation starter, because these issues need to be discussed until we see change.” Precious grew up in Sheffield in the North of England, where she began singing at the church where her father leads a congregation. A native of the streaming generation, she used the internet to discover Destiny’s Child, Brandy and Aaliyah who inspire her laidback 90s aesthetic; and poured over the performance prowess of Beyoncé, Billie Eilish and Lady Gaga - using this rich tapestry of influences to study how to become an artist to be reckoned with. After learning guitar at school and starting a girlband with her schoolmates, Precious started writing songs by herself, about issues faced by her generation - insecurity, social anxiety, navigating love and heartbreak for the first time - the result is a fully-formed, brilliant new voice who has already won over a legion of fans online, eagerly awaiting her next move. Stay tuned for more from Precious this year. “Looking For Trouble” is out everywhere now. INSTAGRAM | TIK TOK | FACEBOOK | YOUTUBE SPOTIFY | APPLE MUSIC Björk releases her tenth studio album, and first in five years, "Fossora", via One Little Independent Records; stream / listen to the album here. "Fossora", a word created by Björk, is the feminised version of the Latin word for “digger,” and a reflection on roots, grounding, love, and family in the context of an underground mushroom world. The album is produced by Björk and recorded by Bergur Thorisson. The new album finds Björk nesting at home in Iceland through the pandemic long enough to set down roots - both literally in her hometown Reykjavík and symbolically. While Björk’s last album, 2017’s critically acclaimed Utopia, was a city in the clouds, Fossora is the sonic opposite: an earth-focused, natural eco-system of bass clarinets and punchy sub-bass.
“Each album always starts with a feeling that I try to shape into sound, this time around the feeling was landing on the earth and digging my feet into the ground (after my last album utopia which was all island in the clouds element air and no bass). It was also woven into how I experienced the "now" this time around 7 billion of us did it together nesting in our homes quarantining being long enough in one place that we shot down roots. My new album "Fossora" is about that, it is a word I made up, it is the feminine of fossore (digger, delver, ditcher) so in short it means "she who digs" (into the ground), so sonically it is about bass, heavy bottom-end, we have 6 bass clarinets and punchy sub, Björk” The album features contributions from serpentwithfeet; Björk’s son, Sindri, and daughter, Ísadóra; clarinet sextet Murmuri; The Hamrahlíð Choir; Emilie Nicolas; Kasimyn of Gabber Modus Operandi; sideproject; El Guincho; many of Björk’s Icelandic acoustic musical collaborators; and bass clarinets, strings, trombones and more. The album also deals with legacy, with two tracks paying tribute to her late mother, Hildur Rúna Hauksdóttir, who died in 2018. Björk is a multidisciplinary artist who, time and again, innovates across music, art, fashion, and technology. From writing, arranging, and producing an expansive music catalog to her collaborations with scientists, app developers, writers, inventors, musicians, and instrument makers, Björk continues to inspire and experiment, redefining the boundaries of what it means to be a musician.
