Today Irish electro-folk duo Saint Sister release their debut album ‘Shape of Silence’. The album is inspired by the connections between people, and the conversations borne from figuring yourself out in relation to another person.
Of the album, Saint Sister say:-
“This record is the culmination of the past 4 years of making music together and navigating our 20s in Dublin. ‘Shape of Silence’ comes from an interest in the power and weight of silence - how heavy it can feel. It is a nod towards the use of space in our music; what can be said and felt in between the gaps.”
Saint Sister’s debut brilliantly presents their ability to create a unique blend of electronic, folk and pop. Exploration of the capabilities of the Irish harp - experimenting with effects and loops pedals and blending with subtle electronica - opened up the pathway to the sonic palette of this record. It opens with ‘The Beginning’; an elegant and ethereal track that celebrates the freedom and conspiratorial magic of a brand-new relationship (which we follow over the arc of the record). Next is ‘Twin Peaks’, a soundscape of luscious vocals and glistening Wurlizter, showcasing the bands skill in crafting relatable and honest lyrics. The start of the album feels more whimsical, optimistic and inquisitive but that atmosphere starts to change, and the songs begin to fracture becoming a little darker; more self-aware and lonelier while the relationship, which began with all the hope and promise of something new, becomes undone.
Tracks like ‘You Never Call’ and ‘Causing Trouble’ touch on themes of nostalgia and longing. The band embrace their Celtic roots with the stripped-back ‘Tir Eile’, meaning ‘Other Land’ in Irish, which powerfully displays their incredibly haunting vocals. ‘Steady’, one of their more electronically-influenced tracks sets extracts from author Kevin Breathnach’s ‘Tunnel Vision’ against a trip-hop infused breakbeat. The last track on the record, ‘The Mater’, offers a searing account of the pain and self-realisation that comes at the end of a relationship and the final act of self-isolation.
‘Shape of Silence’ was recorded with long term co-producer Alex Ryan of Hozier. Of the collaboration, the band says:
“We found a really good energy between the three of us, and over the course of the last three years have started trusting each other’s instincts a lot more and getting comfortable pushing the boundaries.”
‘Shape of Silence’ follows Saint Sister’s well-received debut EP ‘Madrid’, released in 2015. Title track ‘Madrid’ reached over 2 million streams and was playlisted through ‘Introducing’ on BBC Radio 1. The EP drew the attention of Lisa Hannigan who invited the band to open for her on the 20 date ‘At Swim’ European tour.
Saint Sister is Gemma Doherty and Morgan MacIntyre, hailing from the North of Ireland (Derry and Belfast respectively). The timing of their collaboration was key; having met in Dublin just after graduating from college, it became clear very early on that they were looking for the same thing. Bonding over their shared journey from north to south and a passion for music and words, teamed with the post-college confusion, they channelled all of their energy into the makings of a band.
To date, Saint Sister have amassed over 6 million streams combined.
Saint Sister are currently on tour around the US, Europe, Australia and UK. The band will be supporting Hozier on a number of his European tour dates included below:

Friday 23rd November – Verti Music Hall, Berlin, DE

The mighty Like Thieves have returned to the Australian music scene strongly in recent weeks with the release of their latest single "Never See it Coming" and the announcement of their national run of live shows. Now, they are doubling down on what has been a huge response to the song and tour, with the release of a film-clip for the prog / rock track, and the announcement of all support acts for the tour.
The video-clip was shot in Brisbane's CBD in March - and it is a frantic, intense, black-and-white clip and matches the attack & pace of the song. Clint Gough, bassist for the band and director of the stark and striking film-clip, says that "This video is a about mental illness. For some people, getting out of bed or walking down the street can seem like an impossible task. And unfortunately, many people choose to pay the ultimate price to escape from their own thoughts. We want to confront people about this issue and the devastating effects it can have. Because the sad fact is, you can never see it coming."

Dutch singer-songwriter Amber Arcades drops new song, "Goodnight Europe" and part one of a video trilogy, plus UK live dates
Amber Arcades, the alias of Annelotte De Graaf, today shares a brand new track entitled “Goodnight Europe”, which is available now via Heavenly Recordings. This is the first music since the Dutch-born musician released her critically debut album Fading Lines in 2016 followed by the Cannonball EP last June. The track is available to stream and share via Spotify HERE. Annelotte said the following about the track:
"I guess about half of it is me actually being worried about the current state of the Union. The other half is me kind of messing around with, and making fun of, this archetype of the tiresome existentialist academic in me."
Also shared today is a short film directed by Elliott Arndt (http://www.elliottarndt.com/) starring Annelotte, which hints at upcoming news of a second album. This video is part 1 of 3 and features Amber Arcades’ new single, “Goodnight Europe”.
Director Elliott Arndt says of the film:
"A lot of the themes Annelotte wrote about for her record struck very close to home. What I found especially poignant in her lyrics is how it’s mostly through a study of herself and a nonchalant look outside her window that Annelotte makes us get a sense of the political turmoil that’s affecting her. In that respect, I was interested in trying to represent this sense of “banality” in a young adult couple in 2018, who are not only the fruit of a vibrant European Union, but also perhaps the ones most directly affected by its dismantling. I wanted to depict a static, homesick, glitchy romance. And here it is, trying all it can to grow against, amongst and beyond the constricting geographical barriers surrounding it.”
Watch and share the short film HERE.
Amber Arcades will also be performing live in the UK and Europe this summer with a London show at Omeara on June 7th 2018. Full live dates are as follows with UK shows in bold:

Following the release of his critically acclaimed new album ‘Woodland Echoes’, Nick Heyward will release a new single ‘Perfect Sunday Sun’ on 17th November via his own label Gladsome Hawk.
The “idyllic” track, as described by Uncut magazine, focuses on “my interpretation of indecision, idealism and havering - a kind of trilogy, like Krzysztof Kieślowski’s ‘Three Colours’ film series,” explains Nick. Its college rock choruses part away from the bucolic pop of the rest of the album, making the single into the perfect soundtrack of an endless English summer’s afternoon.
Prior to his hugely successful and prolific solo career, Nick came to prominence as the frontman of percolating pop-funk new wave group Haircut 100, a foundational part of the 80s-pop explosion. They released four UK Top 10 hit singles, with their debut album ‘Pelican West’ reaching no. 2 in the UK album charts, no. 31 in USA’s Billboard 200, and ending up being certified platinum by BPI, with Nick gracing the cover of pacesetting style magazine The Face.
Entering as the highest new entry at No. 4 in the Official Independent UK Albums chart, ‘Woodland Echoes’ has seen support across the board with positive reviews from the most credible music publications including; The Observer, Sunday Times Culture, Mojo, Uncut, Classic Pop and Record Collector, while previous singles have been supported by Sarah Cox and Vanessa Feltz on BBC Radio 2, Gary Crowley on BBC London - who made ‘Baby Blue Sky’ his ‘Record of the Week’ – as well as Loose Ends on BBC Radio 4 and BBC London’s Robert Elms. Having already appeared on TV shows including Lorraine, London Live and BBC Red Button, Nick will perform for BBC 1 Children in Need at Wembley Arena in November, and is co-starring in an upcoming Channel 5 show which will see the singer songwriter tour the UK in a camper van in a show called ‘Celebrity Motor Homes’ alongside celebrities such as Lesley Joseph, Melvin Hayes and Cleo Rocos.
With his recent solo set at this year’s Great Escape Festival praised by Drowned In Sound as “one of the finest we heard all weekend, his second coming is imminent” and his recent full band headline show at 229 received rave reviews by the likes of Metro, Nick is set to return to the live circuit with a full UK tour in Spring 2018.
His first record in 18 years “can't be called a return to form for Heyward because he never lost his form; it just went unheard for years,” as written by All Music within the full star’s review. “Call it a welcome return instead, because the world of pop music always needs music this smart, tuneful, and unabashedly romantic.” Nick Heyward – as perfectly described by Louder Than War is still “a songwriter of the highest order.”
